Electrical Service Connection and Upgrade Design
A service upgrade is rarely just a bigger main breaker. It touches the load calculation, the available fault current, the equipment ratings downstream, the utility's supply-side scope and the metering arrangement — and it usually has to be done without shutting the building down.
What the design covers, and utility coordination
Load calculations to CEC Section 8, prepared so the assumptions are visible and defensible rather than buried in a spreadsheet.
Service entrance and main distribution design, including equipment selection against the fault current available at the new service.
Metering arrangements to the supplying utility's requirements.
Grounding and bonding design at the service.
Phasing and temporary supply arrangements where the building must remain in operation through the changeover.
Utility coordination
We prepare and manage the utility submission — BC Hydro, SaskPower, Saskatoon Light and Power, or the relevant Alberta distributor — and we handle the correspondence through to approval and energization.
The single most common cause of delay on a service upgrade is a submission prepared against the wrong utility's requirements, or an interface point that was never explicitly agreed. Both are avoidable.
Common drivers
EV charging infrastructure, which frequently exceeds the spare capacity of an existing service.
Electrification of heating, including heat pump conversions at scale.
Process or production expansion.
Aging service equipment at end of life, where replacement is an opportunity to correct capacity and fault rating at the same time.

A CEC Section 8 load calculation with the assumptions and demand factors written out, in a form the utility and the authority having jurisdiction will accept without a second round of questions.

The utility submission package, prepared and carried through to approval on your behalf.
Metering and CT arrangement coordinated with the utility's requirements rather than assumed from the last project.
Where the upgrade changes fault duty — which it usually does — a check of downstream equipment ratings, so the new service does not quietly leave existing gear under-rated.
Common questions
How long does a service upgrade take? The engineering is rarely the constraint. Utility study and construction queues drive the schedule, and in the Lower Mainland those queues have not been short. Starting the utility conversation at concept stage is the single most effective thing an owner can do.
Do I need a load calculation if I know my peak demand? Yes, and the two are different documents. The utility and the authority having jurisdiction need a Section 8 calculation with stated assumptions; measured peak demand is useful supporting evidence, not a substitute.
We are adding EV charging and the panel looks full. Is an upgrade inevitable? Not always. Measured load data, load management on the charging equipment, and a proper Section 8 calculation together avoid a fair number of upgrades that a nameplate-only assessment would have called unavoidable.
