Arc Flash Studies in Alberta

Furano Pacific Consulting is licensed to practise in Alberta and performs arc flash hazard studies for industrial, institutional and commercial facilities across the province.

The Alberta regulatory basis and facility types

Electrical safety obligations in Alberta flow from the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the associated OHS Code, with CSA Z462 as the referenced practice standard for arc flash.

As elsewhere, the employer must be able to demonstrate that the hazard at each energized work location was assessed. A sealed engineering study is the evidence.

Alberta facility types

Alberta's industrial base — oil and gas processing, petrochemical, power generation, agri-processing and heavy manufacturing — tends to have larger services, more medium-voltage distribution and more in-plant generation than a comparable facility elsewhere in the west.

That changes the study. Motor contribution is more significant, medium-voltage protection coordination is more involved, and in-plant generation changes fault contribution in ways a simple utility-source model will not capture.

What we deliver

Field data collection, short circuit analysis, protective device coordination, incident energy calculation and CSA Z462-compliant labelling — the same scope described on our main arc flash page, with the study sealed under our Alberta licence.

We also perform the coordination and short circuit work as standalone studies where that is what the facility needs.

Furano Pacific Consulting holds an active licence to practise in Alberta. Travel outside the two major centres is scoped and priced up front rather than added later.

Common questions

What does Alberta actually require? Obligations flow from the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its associated code, with CSA Z462 as the referenced practice standard. The employer has to assess and control the arc flash hazard; an incident energy analysis is the defensible way to do it.

Who can seal the report? A professional engineer licensed to practise in Alberta, working under a firm holding a permit. We hold active licences in Alberta as well as British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ontario, which matters for owners with sites in more than one province.

We have sites in two provinces. Can one study cover both? One engagement can, and should. The modelling and labelling work is identical; what differs is the regulatory citation in the report. Running two firms against two provinces produces two incompatible models and twice the cost at the next revision.

What software do you model in? ETAP and EasyPower. You get the model file back.

How long does it take? About two weeks to mobilize after award, and about four weeks from the field visit to the sealed report.
